DNA Maternal Ancestry Test
$119.00
Trace your maternal ancestry by testing your mtDNA.
Uncover the secrets of your maternal ancestry with mtDNA testing. Our simple and painless buccal swab collection kit allows you to quickly and easily collect a sample from inside your mouth. With every test, you’ll receive a full genetic report that includes all of the details you need to start tracing your family tree.
Important Note
This test analyzes DNA from the Y-chromosome (Y-DNA), which is only present in males. Therefore, only males are eligible to take this test.
For females interested in tracing their ancestry, we offer two alternative options:
- Order the Maternal Ancestry Test which investigates mtDNA passed down the maternal line.
- Trace paternal lineage by testing a male relative, such as a brother, father, cousin or nephew.
DESCRIPTION
Trace your maternal ancestry with mtDNA:
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is DNA that is found in the mitochondria of cells. Both males and females have mtDNA so both males and females can take the mtDNA test. mtDNA testing allows you to trace the ancestry of your direct maternal lineage (your mother’s, mother’s, mother’s… maternal lineage). Using your mtDNA results, you can find out whether you are linked to any other individual along your direct maternal line; you can search a global database to seek long lost maternal line relatives from around the world; compare against indigenous populations from around the world to see which population is the closest match to your mtDNA type, compare against famous people in history, and find out which ancient mtDNA Haplogroup you belong to.
TEST METHOD
mtDNA TEST METHOD
Sanger Sequencing of the entire region of mtDNA tested. Regions that can be tested using Sanger Sequencing include HVR1, HVR2 and Coding Regions. If all three regions are tested, it is considered an mtDNA full sequencing test.
Dna Database Usage
Our laboratory is a proud sponsor of the DNA Ancestry Project, a global database for tracing your ancestry and finding family matches. The database is 100% free with no subscription fees.
HOW IT WORKS
Step 1: Order test kit online

FAQ
Can females take the mtDNA test?
Yes, both males and females inherit mtDNA from their mother so both males and females can take the mtDNA test to trace their maternal lineage.
What is the significance of mtDNA HVR1, HVR2 and Coding Region sequences?
mtDNA is unique because it is passed down strictly along the direct maternal line (from mother to child). Only females can pass their mtDNA down to their children, so even though both males and females have mtDNA, only females can pass their mtDNA down to the next generation. The maternal line inheritance pattern of mtDNA means that your mtDNA is inherited directly from your matrilineal ancestors (mother’s, mother’s, mother’s…. maternal lineage). The matrilineal inheritance pattern of mtDNA means that all people who have descended from the same maternal lineage as you will have exactly the same mtDNA as you.
If I test only the HVR1 region, can I test more regions at a later date?
In total the mtDNA has 3 regions: HVR1, HVR2 and Coding Region. If you test only the HVR1 region, or only the HVR1 and HVR2 Regions, you can choose to test the remaining region(s) at a later date.
